Science To Achieve Results (STAR) Graduate Fellowships

Program Update

EPA Science To Achieve Results (STAR) Graduate Fellowship Program selected the final cohort of STAR Fellows under the Request for Applications in 2015. There are no STAR fellowship opportunities at this time.

Through the STAR Graduate Fellowship Program, which began in 1995, the EPA has supported close to 1,900 of the nation’s brightest and most highly motivated students in their academic and research pursuits. EPA stays committed to graduate Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education and the development of future environmental workforce. EPA has partnered with the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) to provide training for active NSF GRFP Fellows. Please visit the EPA GRIP and NSF web pages for more information about federal internship opportunities.

In addition, other research training opportunities for students may be available through EPA’s ORISE Internship/Research Participation Programs.  Students are also encouraged to peruse the Federal Opportunities for Graduate Students web portal for STEM research training programs.

Until the final Request for Applications in 2015, EPA offered STAR Graduate Fellowships to support masters' students and doctoral candidates in environmental studies. Each year, students in the United States competed for STAR Fellowships through a rigorous review process. Those students who were selected were supported to pursue degrees in traditionally recognized environmental disciplines as well as other fields such as social anthropology, urban and regional planning, and decision sciences. Since the program began in 1995, EPA has awarded approximately 1,900 STAR Fellowships to students in every state and most territories. Fellowships have helped educate new academic researchers, government scientists, science teachers and environmental engineers.
