EPA and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) are considering whether to renew permissions for Safety-Kleen Systems Inc. in East Chicago, Indiana, to store and treat hazardous polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in used oil. Safety-Kleen has held a permit for PCB treatment and storage since 1998. EPA and IDEM accepted public comments on the proposed permit approval through August 31, 2019. They held an informational meeting on July 16, 2019.
