U.S. EPA to hold Aug. 1 public meeting for the Adams Plating Superfund site in Lansing, Michigan

CHICAGO (July 26, 2017) — Environmental Protection Agency will hold a public meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 1, to provide an update on the Adams Plating Superfund site. Representatives of federal, state, and local environmental and health agencies will be available to answer questions about the project.

The former electroplating facility is located at 521 N. Rosemary St. in Lansing. In 1989, the government added the site to the National Priorities List, a roster of the worst contaminated sites in the country. EPA completed a cleanup in the 1990s, but a fire in late 2010 destroyed the Adams Plating building causing new contamination. The immediate pollution resulting from the fire was cleaned up in 2011.

EPA responders returned to the site in 2016 to sample soil, groundwater and underground soil gas and found the potential for vapor intrusion. Vapor intrusion refers to the problem of underground gases seeping into buildings and causing hazardous indoor air pollution. This year, an investigation confirmed there were no excessive vapor levels or immediate health concerns associated with the Adams Plating site.
