HAVANA (May 7, 2019) – U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will begin an asbestos cleanup at the Crescent Forge and Shovel site, a former steel tillage tool facility at 405 West Tinkham St., Havana, Ill. The facility operated from approximately 1902 until 2008. After the closing, the buildings on-site were improperly demolished, resulting in piles of asbestos-containing debris left at the property.

In 2018, Illinois EPA referred the site to U.S. EPA. The federal agency will remove asbestos-containing material as well as hazardous waste-containing drums and containers at the site. U.S. EPA anticipates the cleanup to begin in early June and will take up to three months.
