DALLAS - (Feb. 23, 2016) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is awarding People, Prosperity and the Planet (P3) grants to three teams of university students in Texas for their proposed projects to develop new, sustainable products and strategies. The students are from Lamar University in Beaumont, Southern Methodist University in Dallas and Texas Southern University in Houston.

"These students are doing just the kind of work that is so important for the future of our environment," said EPA Regional Administrator Ron Curry. "These projects will introduce students and educators to solutions that protect health and the environment while spurring economic development."

Funding for the P3 competition is divided into two phases. Teams are selected to receive grants of up to $15,000 to fund the development of their projects, then teams compete for awards of up to $75,000 to further develop their designs and potentially bring them to the marketplace.

This year's teams are testing innovative ideas such as repurposing chemical byproducts from the mining industry into new concrete that helps inhibit the corrosion of steel and developing a food waste collection kiosk that will spur food waste to energy production in the local community.

EPA's P3 Program is a unique college competition for designing solutions for a sustainable future. P3 offers students quality hands-on experience that brings their classroom learning to life.
