SAN FRANCISCO — On Thursday, May 12th, U.S. EPA Region 9 will join Monterey County Free Libraries partners at an official groundbreaking event to launch construction of the Mary Agnes Young Library in San Lucas, Calif. The cleanup of ground contaminants, which allowed for redevelopment of the property, was made possible by a $123,000 grant through the U.S. EPA’s Brownfields program. Monterey County had previously received $74,000 in EPA contract assistance to study the contamination at the site and to identify possible cleanup options.

The new LEED silver library of approximately 1,200 square feet will provide study and seating areas, a larger selection of materials, hosting of school visits, programming for all ages, and computer and internet access for students and families. Key design features include: two outdoor trellis patio covers to allow for shaded outdoor programming, a solar photovoltaic electrical system to offset electricity use, recycled building materials, water efficient fixtures and energy efficient HVAC units, and drought-resistant landscaping. The library construction is being funded by the County of Monterey, Monterey County Free Libraries, grants from the Monterey Peninsula Foundation and Community Development Block Grants, and a donation from the Sarmento family in honor of their mother and grandmother. Mary Agnes Young Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2016.
