DALLAS – (April 15, 2016) On Friday, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Regional Administrator Ron Curry attended the opening of Cedar Valley College’s Environmental Learning Area. The college, part of the Dallas County Community College District, is recognized as a Center of Excellence in Sustainability and has pledged to reduce their carbon emissions by 20 percent by 2020.

“Cedar Valley College is helping fulfill EPA’s mission by preparing and encouraging students, employees, and community members to live more sustainably,” Curry said. “We thank the college for their leadership and innovation in creating a sustainable future for North Texas.”

Dr. Jennifer Wimbish, Cedar Valley College president, opened the school’s Environmental Learning Area with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. This outdoor classroom provides space for students to learn about different habitat types represented on the campus, including wetlands, prairie, and woodlands.

Cedar Valley College has partnered with EPA for several projects, such as studying the feasibility of using solar energy on campus and joining EPA’s Food Recovery Challenge. Friday’s ribbon-cutting was part of the Dallas County Community College District’s sixth annual Sustainability Summit.
