EPA completes cleanup at 100 properties at the American Lead site in Indianapolis; soil sampling to continue
For Immediate Release: No. 16-OPA093
CHICAGO (Dec. 13, 2017) — U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has finished removing lead-contaminated soil from 101 properties at the American Lead site in the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood of Indianapolis. EPA began this Superfund removal project in 2016 and will continue to sample soil at additional area properties next year as part of its assessment of long-term cleanup options for this site.
The site is located in a former industrial area dating back to the late 1800s, and a secondary smelter operated there from 1946-1965. Between 2005 and 2007, EPA directed NL Industries’ time-critical action to remove lead-contaminated soil at 224 properties.
