PHILADELPHIA (October 30, 2017) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced an Environmental Justice Small Grant award of $30,000 to Friends of Deckers Creek, Inc., a community group based in Dellslow, West Virginia.

EPA’s Environmental Justice Small Grants program provides funding for non-profit and tribal organizations to partner with stakeholders in industry, government, and academia.

Funding will be used to coordinate water quality workshops and field trips within the rural communities of Monongalia and Preston counties. Project partners include the Mountaineer Boys and Girls Club, the Shack Neighborhood House, Morgantown High School, and the Morgantown Utility Board.

Friends of Deckers Creek will lead tours of stream restoration projects, acid mine drainage remediation projects, water treatment facilities, and other areas within the watershed where environmental improvements are taking place. The group will also provide hands-on lessons on ecological concepts and examine the effects of nearby pollutants on the environment.

EPA’s Environmental Justice Small Grants Program is designed to help communities understand and address exposure to multiple environmental harms and risks, and funds projects up to $30,000 a year.
