EPA and New Mexico Work for Clean Air; Million-Dollar Award to New Mexico Environmental Department

DALLAS – (May 15, 2017) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently awarded $1,031,756 to the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED) for their air pollution prevention and abatement program.

“At EPA, we are protecting the environment by engaging our state partners,” said Administrator Scott Pruitt. “This grant represents what EPA is all about, empowering our states to protect their environment.”

“Air pollution does not follow man-made boundaries, and controlling it takes collaboration among local, state, and federal groups,” said Acting Regional Administrator Sam Coleman. “This grant will support NMED’s important work to improve air quality in New Mexico.”

NMED will use the funds to support a range of activities, including air permitting and air planning, as well as environmental compliance, surveillance, and abatement monitoring activities. The funds will also help NMED carry out clean air plans for ozone and other pollutants, review air monitoring data and address violations, and collaborate with other partners in New Mexico to achieve pollution-reduction goals.

The federal Clean Air Act protects public health and welfare from different types of air pollution from a variety of sources.
