Renewable or Not?

Click on the different parts of the landscape below to find out which resources are renewable.

Renewable energy resources include sunshine, wind, and flowing water. These resources are renewable because they won't run out or they can be replaced within a few years or decades.

Nonrenewable energy resources include fossil fuels like coal, oil, and natural gas. These resources are nonrenewable because it took millions of years for them to form, and once they are used up, they are essentially gone forever. Burning fossil fuels emits carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which stays there for a very long time and causes climate change.
