1996 Assessment Results

Information provided for informational purposes onlyNote: EPA no longer updates this information, but it may be useful as a reference or resource.
1996 Emissions: This link includes maps and data tables that present 1996 emissions and emission density information for each of 32 air toxics and diesel particulate matter (diesel PM) for the contiguous United States (plus Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands).

1996 Modeled Ambient Concentrations: This link provides maps, bar charts, and data tables of EPA’s 1996 ambient concentration estimates across the contiguous United States (plus Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands) for the 32 air toxics and diesel PM, using an air dispersion model (the ASPEN model) and 1996 national air toxics emissions as input to the model.

1996 Modeled Human Exposure: This link provides information about EPA's 1996 population exposure estimates across the contiguous United States (plus Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands) to the 32 air toxics and diesel particulate matter, using an inhalation exposure model (HAPEM4 model) and the estimated ambient concentrations (i.e., ASPEN model results) as input to the model. Exposure modeling is an important step in this assessment because it factors in that people move around from one location to another, outside to inside, etc.

1996 Estimated Risk: This link provides information about the 1996 potential public health risks due to inhalation of air toxics, including both cancer and non-cancer health effects. The estimates rely on current EPA risk assessment and risk characterization guidelines and the estimated population exposures (HAPEM4 model results).
