1996 National Air Toxics Assessment Activities

Information provided for informational purposes onlyNote: EPA no longer updates this information, but it may be useful as a reference or resource.
EPA is currently conducting a National-Scale Air Toxics assessment that includes four steps that look at the year 1996:
  1. Compiling a national emissions inventory of air toxics emissions from outdoor sources.
  2. Estimating ambient concentrations of air toxics across the contiguous United States.
  3. Estimating population exposures across the contiguous United States.
  4. Characterizing potential public health risk due to inhalation of air toxics including both cancer and noncancer effects.
Since EPA does not maintain an extensive national monitoring network for air toxics, this national-scale assessment will provide a more comprehensive picture of the national air toxics problem.
