Ambient Fine Particulate Monitor Verified

The ETV Advanced Monitoring Systems (AMS) Center, operated by Battelle, has verified the performance of the Pall Corporation Xact 625, a field deployable X-ray fluorescence analyzer for determining metals in particulate matter in ambient air.  The verification evaluated the ability of the Xact 625 to provide reliable quantitative measurements of metals in particulate matter having aerodynamic diameter less than 10 micrometers during continuous unattended operations.  Performance of the Xact 625 was verified for the following parameters:  comparability, correlation, bias, data completeness, and operational factors such as maintenance requirements, ease of use, and effectiveness of data acquisition. Verification report and statement.

Underground Storage Tank Leak Detection Technologies Verified

The ETV Advanced Monitoring Systems (AMS) Center, operated by Battelle, has verified the performance of four automatic tank gauging leak detection systems for detecting water ingress into an underground storage tank holding gasoline and gasoline/ethanol blends.  The four technologies are:  the TSP-IGF4 Water Float and TSP-IGF4P Float, developed by Franklin Fueling Systems, and the Standard Water Float and Phase-Two™ Water Detector, developed by Veeder-Root Company.  The verification test evaluated the performance of each system in ethanol-blended fuel service.  Multiple test designs were included in the evaluation:  a continuous water ingress test with two parts to determine minimum detection height and smallest detectable incremental change in height, respectively, and a quick water dump followed a fuel dump.  Performance of each of the leak detection systems was verified for the following parameters:  accuracy, sensitivity, precision, and operational factors such as maintenance, ease of use, and consumables/waste generated. Verification report and statement.

Baghouse Filtration Products Verified

The ETV Air Pollution Control Technology (APCT) Center, operated by RTI International, verified the performance of two baghouse filtration products for control of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) emissions.  The TG100 Filtration Media and TG800 Filtration Media, developed by TTG Inc., were verified for the following aspects of filter fabric performance:  filter outlet PM2.5 concentration, filter outlet total mass concentration, pressure drop, filtration cycle time, mass gain on the filter fabric and number of cleaning cycles. Verification report and statement.

Distributed Generation Combined Heat and Power Systems Verified

The ETV Greenhouse Gas Technology (GHG) Center, operated by Southern Research, has verified the performance of a gas-fired reciprocating internal combustion engine combined with a heat recovery system.  The Climate Energy freewatt™ Micro-Combined Heat and Power System, developed by Climate Energy, LLC, is designed for distributed electrical power and heat generation applications.  The technology was tested for the following verification parameters:  electrical performance and power quality, electrical efficiency, combined heat and power thermal performance, atmospheric emissions performance, and nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxide emission offsets relative to baseline conditions.  Verification report and statement.

The ETV GHG Center has also verified the performance of a second combined heat and power system, the Tecogen Model CM-100 manufactured by Tecogen.  Building Energy Solutions installed six natural gas-fired CM-100 premium power modules as part of a distributed generation combined heat and power upgrade at the Madison-Oneida Board of Cooperative Educational Services (Verona, NY).  The Tecogen system was tested for the following verification parameters:  electrical performance, electrical efficiency, combined heat and power thermal performance and thermal efficiency, atmospheric emissions, and nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxide emission offsets relative to baseline conditions.  Verification report and statement.

    
Mold-Resistant Insulation Product Verified

ETV’s Environmental and Sustainable Technology Evaluation (ESTE) project for Microbial-Resistant Building Materials has verified the performance of the Premium Plus™ Rockwool Insulation, manufactured by Amerrock Products, LP.  According to the vendor’s description, Premium Plus™ Rockwool is a 100% natural spray insulation made from trap rock and steel slag.  Mold resistance testing was performed following the guidelines outlined in ASTM 6329, which provides a quantitative endpoint for mold growth in a well-controlled, static chamber environment.  During a 12 week period, ETV determined mold growth on Premium Plus™ Rockwool insulation samples which had been inoculated with two test organisms, Stachybotrys chartarum and Asperguillus versicolor.  Additional measurements, including volatile organic compound and aldehyde emissions were also performed using ASTM D5116-06.  Verification report and statement.

Grouting Materials for Wastewater Infrastructure Rehabilitation Verified

ETV’s Environmental and Sustainable Technology Evaluation (ESTE) project for Rehabilitation Technologies for Drinking Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection Systems has verified the performance of three grouting materials for wastewater collection systems.  The three products are:  the Warren Environmental M-301 Epoxy Trowel-On Mastic System developed by Warren Environmental, Inc; GST #3 Grout provided by Separation Systems Consultants, Inc.; and AV-118 Duriflex Acrylic Chemical Grout developed by Avanti International, Inc.  Verification testing was performed by the University of Houston’s Center for Innovative Grouting Materials and Technology.  Each grouting material was evaluated for the following verification parameters:  working properties (setting time), physical and mechanical properties (unit weight, water absorption, shrinkage, permeability and compressive strength), durability (wet/dry cycle and chemical resistance), environmental properties, grout-substrate interactions under both wet and wet/dry conditions, and effectiveness of the grout in controlling leakage in cracked concrete using a model test.  Verification statements and reports.

  
Vehicle Fuel Additive Verified

The ETV Greenhouse Gas Technology (GHG) Center, operated by Southern Research, has verified the performance of the TEA Fuel Additive developed by Taconic Energy, Inc., for gasoline passenger vehicles.  The primary verification parameter for this technology was the fuel economy change due to TEA additive use and, subsequently, percentage fuel savings relative to the reference fuel.  As a secondary verification parameter, engine emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases (carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and total halogenated carbon) were also determined.  Verification report and statement.

Drinking Water Ultraviolet Disinfection and Inactivation Technologies Verified

The ETV Drinking Water Systems (DWS) Center, operated by NSF International, has verified the performance of an ultraviolet (UV) disinfection technology for inactivation of microbiological contaminants in drinking water.  The NeoTech D438 UV Water Treatment System, developed by NeoTech Aqua Solutions, Inc., was tested to validate the UV dose delivered by the system using biodosimetry—which determines the log inactivation of a challenge microorganism—and a set line approach.  MS2 coliphage was used as the challenge organism in this verification.  Based on the results of testing, validation factors for log reduction credits for Cryptosporidium and Giardia were calculated.  Verification report and statement.

The ETV DWS Center has also completed an existing data review of third-party validation and performance data for the Atlantium R-200 Hydro-Optic Water Disinfection System (2-Bell Configuration), developed by Atlantium Technologies, Ltd.  The DWS Center evaluated existing validation data for the R-200 system as presented in a report developed by HydroQual Environmental Engineers and Scientists, P.C.  The R-200 was tested by HydroQual to validate the UV dose delivered by the system and to develop a calculated-dose algorithm based on observed log inactivation of challenge organisms (live Adenovirus 2 and coliphage surrogates T1UV, Qβ and MS2).  HydroQual also measured UV dose distribution and performed biodosimetry testing using a live Adenovirus 2 strain to validate the capability of the reactor to achieve inactivation levels required for EPA 4-log virus inactivation credit for surface and ground water disinfection.  The DWS Center reviewed the Validation Report developed by HydroQual, with all supporting data, for conformance to the U.S. EPA UV Disinfection Guidance Manual.  The center prepared an Existing Data Review Report for the technology.  The existing data review report and verification statement will be available soon.
