Additional Sectors with Initiatives
This page provides information on other product sectors where product stewardship initiatives are beginning to take off.
Building Materials
Armstrong World Industries' Ceiling Tile Recycling Program
The Loading Dock - a non-profit
organization that offers the opportunity to donate used building and construction
materials to nonprofit organizations and low income families to purchase
at minimal cost.
Paint
Approximately 10 percent of all paint purchased in the United States is not used (e.g., leftover from a paint project). This amounts to about 64 million gallons annually. EPA, state and local governments, non-profits, paint manufacturers, retailers, paint recyclers, and contractors are working to develop management solutions for leftover paint that are both financially and environmentally sustainable.
Resources
The Product Stewardship Institute(PSI) : Facilitating a national dialogue, supported by the paint industry, EPA, states and others, directed at reducing the generation of leftover paint, while increasing reuse and recycling opportunities.
Partners for Waste Paint Solutions : A partnership between the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, local paint retailers, and other interested parties allows consumers to bring both usable and unusable paint products back to retailers, recycling centers, and other locations for reformulation or disposal.
Product Care’s Paint Stewardship Program : British Columbia collects old paint for recycling into new paint or proper disposal, with financial and other assistance from a fee on the sale of new paint.
Pesticides
Product Care- a nonprofit
industry-affiliated organization, operates a takeback program for residents
of British Columbia to drop off old, unwanted, or out-of-date pesticides
at dozens of depots across the province. The program is funded by an eco-fee,
collected from consumers at the point of sale.
Propane Tanks and Gas Cylinders
The Product
Stewardship Institute (PSI ) (Select Products, then Gas Cylinders)- convenes a national dialogue to address
problems associated with the end-of-life management of small, non-refillable
gas cylinders.
Miscellaneous Products

requirements, and ease of disassembly.
Nike's
Reuse-a-Shoe Program - collects used and defective athletic shoes,
grinds them up, and uses the resulting material to construct synthetic
athletic surfaces.
Radioactive Materials
Product
Stewardship Institute (PSI)(Select Products, then Radioactive) - developing strategies for end-of-life
management of tritium exit signs (which are used in many commercial and
industrial buildings to illuminate exit doors and paths) and nuclear fixed
gauges (used in some industries to monitor or control manufacturing processes).
