Building Materials

Armstrong World Industries' Ceiling Tile Recycling Program Exit EPA- recycles old ceiling tiles into new tiles.

The Loading Dock Exit EPA- a non-profit organization that offers the opportunity to donate used building and construction materials to nonprofit organizations and low income families to purchase at minimal cost.

Paint

Approximately 10 percent of all paint purchased in the United States is not used (e.g., leftover from a paint project). This amounts to about 64 million gallons annually. EPA, state and local governments, non-profits, paint manufacturers, retailers, paint recyclers, and contractors are working to develop management solutions for leftover paint that are both financially and environmentally sustainable.

Resources

The Product Stewardship Institute(PSI) Exit EPA: Facilitating a national dialogue, supported by the paint industry, EPA, states and others, directed at reducing the generation of leftover paint, while increasing reuse and recycling opportunities.

Partners for Waste Paint Solutions Exit EPA: A partnership between the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency, local paint retailers, and other interested parties allows consumers to bring both usable and unusable paint products back to retailers, recycling centers, and other locations for reformulation or disposal.

Product Care’s Paint Stewardship Program Exit EPA: British Columbia collects old paint for recycling into new paint or proper disposal, with financial and other assistance from a fee on the sale of new paint.

Pesticides

Product CareExit EPA- a nonprofit industry-affiliated organization, operates a takeback program for residents of British Columbia to drop off old, unwanted, or out-of-date pesticides at dozens of depots across the province. The program is funded by an eco-fee, collected from consumers at the point of sale.

Propane Tanks and Gas Cylinders

The Product Stewardship Institute (PSI )Exit EPA (Select Products, then Gas Cylinders)- convenes a national dialogue to address problems associated with the end-of-life management of small, non-refillable gas cylinders.

Miscellaneous Products

Herman Miller, Inc.'s Exit EPA Mirra Chair - first product designed utilizing Herman Miller's stringent Design for the Environment protocols, which examines the chair design for recyclability, material chemistry, manufacturability, packaging requirements, and ease of disassembly.

Nike's Reuse-a-Shoe Program Exit EPA- collects used and defective athletic shoes, grinds them up, and uses the resulting material to construct synthetic athletic surfaces.

Radioactive Materials

Product Stewardship Institute (PSI)Exit EPA(Select Products, then Radioactive) - developing strategies for end-of-life management of tritium exit signs (which are used in many commercial and industrial buildings to illuminate exit doors and paths) and nuclear fixed gauges (used in some industries to monitor or control manufacturing processes).
