EPA Awards Grants to Promote Environmental Stewardship in Michigan
On July 31, 2014, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced two grants totaling over $200,000 to Calvin College and the Great Lakes Fishery Trust for environmental stewardship projects in Michigan. EPA Region 5 Administrator Susan Hedman was joined by Grand Rapids Mayor George Heartwell for the announcement.

EPA's grant to Calvin College will support green infrastructure projects like the bioswale at Kreiser Pond that will reduce runoff and improve water quality in the Grand River watershed.

EPA funding will be used to support Calvin College's Green Team, a summer program for urban high school students to learn about watershed ecology and get practical job experience installing green infrastructure.
EPA funding for asbestos removal clears way for major demolition project in Gary, Ind.
The former Sheraton Hotel has been a blight on downtown Gary. EPA Brownfields grants funded asbestos removal from the abandoned building, clearing the way for its demolition.

Demolishing the Sheraton Hotel has been a joint effort of EPA, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the city of Gary and the Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority.
