Water sampling

EPA water contaminant data are compared to technical benchmarks to determine the potential effects of contaminants on human health and the environment. Sample results are also being compared to EPA water quality criteria guidelines and Michigan water quality standards, when available.

Understanding EPA's water data

Water sampling results - assessing impacts on human health, wildlife, and aquatic life

Water samples collected to assess potential oil spill impacts on human health were analyzed for volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including those found in oil. To reach a level of concern, only one of the 74 chemicals would need to be present at an elevated level.
Michigan Rule 57 surface water quality values for select chemicals (PDF) (3pp, 26K About PDF)
This document provides access to water quality values for substances of interest that have been derived by the State of Michigan for the protection of human health, wildlife, and aquatic. Since the Kalamazoo River is not used as a drinking water source, only the non-drinking water human health values are provided in the table. Comparing surface water sample results to these values may assist in the assessment of the potential for adverse impacts. Private ground water well sampling

On September 23, EPA issued a supplemental order Supplement to order for compliance under section 311(c) of the Clean Water Act - Docket No. CWA-1321-5-10-001 (PDF) (3pp, 558K) - September 23, 2010 to Enbridge requiring the company to continue the drinking water sampling program established by the local health departments. In addition, Enbridge is required to do an initial ground water investigation to assist in determining any potential short-term and long-term effects to ground water which may be used for public consumption.
