Making a Difference: An Ohio Non-point Source Project

September 2006

Powderlick Run in Ohio's Bokes Creek Watershed was restored with funding partially provided by EPA's Section 319 Non-point Source Program.

Powderlick Run in Ohio's Bokes Creek Watershed was restored with funding partially provided by EPA's Section 319 Non-point Source Program.

With EPA Clean Water Act Section 319 money and additional funding and support provided by DayLay Egg Farm, Oxbow Stream Restoration, the City of Columbus, Union County Soil & Water Conservation District, the Scioto River Federation, and Ohio EPA, a channelized segment of Powderlick Run in the Bokes Creek Watershed was restored from an agricultural drain to a two-stage meandering stream channel. The restoration resulted in measurable improvements to nitrogen assimilation capabilities, habitat conditions, and biological integrity, with reductions in loadings of nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment in a stream with historically high levels of nitrates and atrazine and fish kills connected with manure management problems as a review of the project (Making a Difference: An Ohio Non-point Source Project (PDF) (4pp., 347K) reveals.
