EPA conducts and supervises investigation and cleanup actions at a variety of sites where oil or hazardous chemicals have been released into the environment or when there is threat of releases of these substances. Cleanup activities take place at active and abandoned waste sites (Superfund, Brownfield, Federal Facility, and RCRA sites) and where above and underground storage tanks have leaked (UST sites).

EPA and its state and territorial partners have developed a variety of cleanup programs to assess and, where necessary, clean up these contaminated properties and sites. Cleanups are done by EPA, other federal agencies, states or municipalities, or the company or party responsible for the contamination.

The following links provide cleanup-related information and resources. Because site cleanup information and policy is often specific to the type of contaminated site or property, if you are looking for cleanup information specific to your site, it is important to know what type of site you have.
