EPA has conducted more than 4,800 incident responses since deploying emergency response personnel following the destruction left by Hurricane Katrina along the Mississippi and Alabama coastline. An incident response is defined as an investigation of a National Response Center Report, contacting facilities, and reporting hazmat debris while conducting land or water assessment in the affected areas.

Division Alpha - Hancock County, Miss.
Alpha Team 1conducted assessment and removal activities around Pearlington and continued implementation of the ESF 10 assessment process. Alpha Team 2 also conducted assessment and removal activities in the Waveland neighborhood areas and continued implementation of the ESF 10 assessment process. Alpha Team conducted assessment and removal activities around the Pass Christian neighborhood areas.

Division Bravo – Harrison County, Miss.
Division B currently consists of two Removal Teams and one team to coordinate ESF-10 clearance and HHW activities within Division B. Team 1 was deployed to Gulfport to conduct a final round of EPA-sponsored scheduled HHW curbside collection operations in the Courthouse neighborhoods. Items were collected and transported from the curbside to the Division B Collection Point. A total of 578 HHW items were collected by Team 1, including six 55-gallon drums. Team 1 also eliminated five items from the Division B Open Items List. Team 3, which currently consists of two strike teams, continued ESF-10 clearance surveys in the Gulfport area. To date, Team 3 has cleared approximately ten grids. One strike team from Team 3 was also temporarily detailed to Division A. A total of approximately 526 HHW items were collected by Team 1. Team 1 also closed an AST in the city of Pass Christian, as requested by the Corps of Engineers during the bi-weekly debris meeting.

Division Charlie- Jackson County, Miss., and Baldwin and Mobile Counties, Ala.
Team 1 collected HHW containers while performing the second round of curbside pick-ups in Pascagoula 3. Team 2 collected HHW containers while performing the second round of curbside pick-ups in Gautier North. Teams 3, 4, and 5 performed ESF-10 assessments in the Gulf Park Estates area.

SESD Air Monitoring Support Team
Eight locations in Hancock, Harrison and Jackson Counties are being monitored. All sites monitor for PM2.5, PM10, metals and asbestos. Three sites also have air toxics monitors (VOCs, HAPs) and of those three, two have hexavalent chromium monitors. Sampling is likely to continue until the end of September 2006.
