Water Line and Fiber Optic Cable Relocation, 10th Street Superfund Site, Columbus, Nebraska
INTRODUCTION
In January 2009, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will begin construction on the relocation of a water line and fiber optic cable line that are part of the ground water extraction and treatment (GET) system. The construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of March 2009. The GET system provides treated water to the Columbus public water supply system.
The relocation of the water line and fiber optic cable line is necessary because of the expansion of the Union Pacific Railroad (UPR) tracks in downtown Columbus.
PLANNED WORK
The planned activities include excavating and boring approximately 1300 feet of 10 inch water line and fiber optic cable line along UPR right-of-way and city property. The location of the new pipe is planned to be along the south side of 12th Street between 25th and 28th avenues. After completion of construction of the new pipeline and connecting the pipeline to the existing GET system, the old pipeline located south of the UPR tracks will be abandoned. The GET system will have to be shutdown temporarily while the new pipe is being connected to the GET system. At that time, the city water supply will come from the city's other sources of water, the north and south well fields.
During these activities, EPA's contractor may have several workers and pieces of
equipment along the street and in the UPR right-of-way. The construction is being coordinated with the UPR's railroad expansion project. EPA will work with the contractor to minimize any disruptions to traffic flow. This is part of the ongoing work at the 10th Street Superfund site. We ask for your patience while we work to clean up the contaminant plume.
