Fact Sheet

August 2013

Removal Action, Thompson Chemicals, Inc. Superfund Site, St. Louis, Missouri

INTRODUCTION

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 will oversee a removal action at the Thompson Chemicals, Inc. Superfund Site. The site is located at 60 Chouteau Avenue, an industrial area of downtown St. Louis, Missouri. Actions will include the removal and off-site disposal of 12 roll-off boxes and their contents (metal boxes used to store loose material), berm soil around a former tank farm, and 238 drums filled with investigation-derived waste and other contaminated materials. Workers will be dressed in protective gear during the removal action.

BACKGROUND

The Thompson Chemicals, Inc. Site is currently an active solvent transfer station. A tank farm formerly existed in the central portion of the site; however, all that remains of the tank farm is a raised earthen barrier separating two areas that was used as a secondary containment for the tanks. The berm, or raised barrier, contains approximately 400 yards of soil contaminated with dioxins and other chemicals of concern.

Due to the passage of time, the condition of the roll-off boxes containing contaminated soil has deteriorated to an extent that could potentially jeopardize the integrity of the containers and their ability to secure the contents. After assessment of the site, EPA determined that the roll-off boxes, drums, and berm soil should be removed from the site and properly disposed.

A quick removal action will eliminate the risk of contaminated soil being released into the environment.

The removal action will begin near the end of August 2013, and is expected to be completed in approximately three months.
