EPA Announces Follow-Up Soil Sampling near the Proposed Strecker Forest Subdivision, Wildwood, Missouri

INTRODUCTION

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is preparing to conduct follow-up soil sampling near the proposed Strecker Forest subdivision located near Strecker Road in Wildwood, Missouri.

EXPANDED SITE REVIEW

In June 2012, EPA finalized an Expanded Site Review to characterize environmental conditions in the vicinity of the proposed Strecker Forest subdivision in Wildwood, Missouri. This investigation supplemented past studies and provided a comprehensive data set that could be used to assess the suitability of the property for residential development.

One of the findings of the Expanded Site Review was that two areas comprising approximately ½ acre in the northeast corner and along the eastern side of the property exceeded screening level concentrations for dioxin. Although levels detected did not present immediate threats, EPA fenced the affected area in late 2012.

The final report of the Expanded Site Review is posted online at www.epa.gov/region7/cleanup/strecker_forest

FOLLOW-UP SOIL SAMPLING

EPA plans to conduct limited soil sampling in areas enclosed by the fence and within close proximity of the fence during July 2013. The primary goal of this sampling is to better define the concentration and volume of soils in those areas exceeding screening level concentrations for dioxin.

EPA will also conduct sampling in portions of the neighboring Bliss property that are adjacent to the preservation area of the proposed Strecker Forest subdivision in order to understand current surface soil conditions on that adjacent property.

NEXT STEPS

EPA will use information obtained from this sampling event to develop a plan to ensure the continued protection of human health and the environment based on existing and future use of the site.
