Reassessment of Soil and Groundwater, Atlantic Water Supply Superfund Site, Atlantic, Cass County, Iowa
INTRODUCTION
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 will be in Atlantic, Iowa, to obtain access agreements from residential property owners. This access to properties will allow EPA to conduct sub-slab air sampling in homes to determine if vapor intrusion concerns may exist from perchloroethylene (PCE) contamination in groundwater.
Sampling ports will be installed in homes during the week of February 11, 2013. Samples will be taken during the week of February 18, 2013. Results from sampling activities should be available to share with property owners within 30 days of the sampling. EPA expects to assess 10-15 properties during this sampling event.
BACKGROUND
Atlantic, Iowa, is a rural community in northeastern Cass County, about 75 miles west of Des Moines, Iowa, and 45 miles northeast of Council Bluffs, Iowa.
The municipal water supply well field in Atlantic, Iowa, has been impacted by PCE. The source of the contamination is believed to be a former dry cleaners facility.
Based on historical data, the building that housed the former dry cleaners was demolished between 1982 and 1994. The location is now owned by the Rolling Hills Bank and Trust.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is monitoring the public drinking water supply wells to ensure that drinking water contamination is below action levels. EPA is reassessing the area to also ensure that contamination levels at the site are protective of human health and the environment.
SITE REASSESSMENT
This site reassessment is to document current groundwater concentrations at the source area and in downgradient municipal drinking water wells; to assess threats posed to public health, welfare, or the environment; and to determine if further investigation/action under the CERCLA or Superfund program is necessary.
The reassessment includes review of information available from federal, state, and local agencies; sampling to identify releases of hazardous substances to the environment and their existing pathways; and determining the need for a removal action.
