Public Availability Meeting on Plans to Begin Final Cleanup, Chemical Commodities, Inc. Superfund Site, Olathe, Johnson County, Kansas

INTRODUCTION

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 invites the public to attend a public availability meeting on Monday, November 8, 2010 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the Fire Administration Building, 1225 S. Hamilton Circle, Olathe, Kansas.  The meeting is being held to provide information to the public on final cleanup and restoration plans for the Chemical Commodities, Inc. (CCI) Superfund Site.  EPA and Boeing will provide an overview of the new cleanup information at the public meeting.  The plans have been submitted to EPA by the design team.

BACKGROUND

Boeing approached several neighboring property owners to discuss purchasing their homes and they agreed.  Over the last few months, EPA and the design team determined that removing several homes along the CCI fence line will make the cleanup easier to implement and better facilitate restoration of future green space.

There is not a health concern with these homes. Both EPA and the federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry have concluded that the site does not pose an increased health risk to the community. These additional parcels have been incorporated into the overall project design, which is anticipated to be approved by EPA in November 2010.  EPA anticipates that the three homes closest to the site on South Keeler will be demolished by the end of the year.
