RECENT REMOVAL ACTIVITY
Beginning in August 2013, EPA Region 7 oversaw the removal of debris from the Carter Carburetor Building. The debris removal work proceeded as expected, and this phase of the cleanup has been completed.
EPA did not encounter any unexpected issues in the debris removal phase of the project.
Total estimated material removed from the Carter Carburetor building exceeded 1,400 cubic yards of asbestos or potentially asbestos-contaminated debris. The debris removed included wood, automobiles, forklifts, metal and roofing material.
NEXT STEPS
The next administrative phase in EPA’s process is to receive, review and approve a work plan from ACF Industries, a potentially responsible party (PRP). This work plan will detail the work to be completed by ACF Industries’ environmental contractor, including a schedule of activities of the work that will be conducted at the site, how the work will be conducted, and when it will be completed.
The work plan is due to EPA by January 10, 2014. Assuming only minor comments and changes would occur, the work plan could be approved by mid-to-late March 2014. On-site work by ACF Industries could then begin by the end of April 2014.
Although EPA cannot precisely determine the exact date when all site work will be complete, the Agency anticipates that, barring unforeseen circumstances, all activities could be completed by late 2017.
PUBLIC AVAILABILITY MEETINGThe public availability meeting will provide an opportunity for nearby residents and interested stakeholders to learn about the next steps in the cleanup process and how EPA's oversight of this cleanup with ACF Industries will be conducted.
