Fact Sheet

March 2013

Public Availability Meeting, Chicago Heights Boulevard Site, St. Louis County, Missouri

INTRODUCTION

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 will hold a Public Availability Meeting for the Chicago Heights Boulevard Site on Thursday, March 7, 2013, 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Elmwood Park, 1452 Dielman Road, St. Louis, Missouri.

In November 2012, soil gas samples were collected in and around those homes that were known to be impacted by vapor intrusion in the Elmwood Park neighborhood. Additional groundwater monitoring wells were also installed. Data from this most recent soil gas and groundwater sampling has been analyzed, and will now be used to help EPA determine what additional investigation and actions may be necessary at the site. EPA Region 7 will provide an update on recent and upcoming sampling activities at the Public Availability Meeting.

EPA reached a settlement with PerkinElmer, Inc. (PerkinElmer), the current owner of 9970 Page Boulevard, the source of the contamination in the area. This settlement, in the form of an Administrative Settlement and Order on Consent, details the work that is being performed by PerkinElmer to address this contamination.

COMMUNITY ADVISORY GROUP

At a previous Public Availability Meeting in December 2012, EPA presented information on the opportunity for residents to form an independent Community Advisory Group (CAG) for the Elmwood Park community.  A CAG is one of EPA’s methods to involve or engage a community in discussions during the cleanup process. A CAG serves as a liaison or voice for the community to communicate issues and concerns to EPA and other parties involved in the cleanup process.

The Elmwood Park community is currently in the process of forming a CAG for this site. If you have questions about the CAG or would like to participate in its meetings, contact Dorothy Rush at 314-993-1490, or Valerie West at 3vwest@sbcglobal.net.
