Public Availability Session to Discuss Vapor Intrusion Risks at the Highway 3 PCE Site, Le Mars, Plymouth County, Iowa


INTRODUCTION

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will hold a Public Availability Session to discuss known groundwater contamination and EPA’s planned vapor intrusion sampling, focusing on the risks of vapor intrusion and indoor mitigation techniques.

PUBLIC AVAILABILITY

EPA plans to host a Public Availability Session at the City Council Chambers in Le Mars, Iowa.

A short presentation will begin at 7:00 p.m. to discuss planned sampling and vapor intrusion risks. In addition to discussing vapor intrusion risks, informational fact sheets will be available, as well as health experts to discuss possible health risks as a result of PCE exposure.

BACKGROUND

The Highway 3 PCE Site includes, but is not limited to, a plume of tetrachloroethene (PCE) first detected during an April 2008, Le Mars Coal Gas Plant site investigation. Subsequently, EPA completed two groundwater sampling events, which assisted in a broader site investigation to define the extent of the PCE plume, and trace back the migration pathway to the potential source areas.

The first phase of the investigation is in the area defined by Plymouth Street (Iowa Highway 3) to the north, Central Street to the west, and Lincoln Street Southeast (SE). Later phases included groundwater sampling several blocks to the northwest of this location.

ABOUT THE CONTAMINATION

Tetrachloroethylene (PCE) is the contaminant of concern. PCE is a chlorinated hydrocarbon solvent. PCE is commonly used in dry-cleaning fluid, spot removers, and degreasers.
