EPA Announces Public Availability Session for Pools Prairie Superfund Site, Neosho, Newton County, Missouri

PUBLIC AVAILABILITY SESSION

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has scheduled a Public Availability Session for the Pools Prairie Superfund Site in Neosho, Missouri.

The Public Availability Session will address the Phase I Research Investigation as well as data collection activities related to the site.

SITE BACKGROUND

In the 1940s, the United States government acquired land in Newton County, Missouri, to construct a United States (U.S.) Army installation named Fort Crowder. In the 1950s, a portion of Fort Crowder was transferred to the Air Force for construction of a rocket engine manufacturing plant, known as Air Force Plant No. 65 (Plant 65). This installation included the Manufacturing Plant, the Test Areas, and later included Building 900. Rocket engine testing and related activities were stopped in 1968.

Beginning in approximately 1968, the Manufacturing Plant was used to manufacture, test, and refurbish jet airplane engines. The plant was sold in 1980 and is still an active privately-owned facility used for testing and refurbishing of jet and helicopter engines.

Studies conducted at the Pools Prairie Site since 1994 have indicated the presence of solvent‑related compounds in multiple areas of the site. Remediation activities have already been conducted at three source areas at the Pools Prairie Site. These areas are referred to as operable units (OUs): the Components Test Area (OU1), the Quince Road Area (OU2), and the Engine Test Area (OU3). A removal action at the Manufacturing Plant Area (OU4) is anticipated to begin in 2012 or 2013, after negotiations on the Administrative Order for the work are complete.

OBJECTIVES

EPA’s short-term and long-term objectives at the Pools Prairie Site include restoring ground water to beneficial use, if possible, and preventing any further human exposure to contaminants. This is done by removing or containing the source(s) of the contamination, cleaning up the affected ground water, and providing affected citizens with access to clean water.
