Public Availability Meeting, Update on Completed Construction Activities at the Chemical Commodities, Inc. Superfund Site, Olathe, Johnson County, Kansas

INTRODUCTION

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 invites the public to attend a public availability meeting on Monday, November 7, 2011 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the Fire Administration Building, 1225 S. Hamilton Circle, Olathe, Kansas.

The meeting is being held to provide information to the public on recently completed cleanup and restoration activities for the Chemical Commodities, Inc. (CCI) Superfund Site. EPA and Boeing will provide an overview and summary of the cleanup activities at the public meeting.

BACKGROUND

In November 2010, EPA approved the Remedial Design Plans submitted by Boeing for addressing the onsite soil and groundwater contamination and offsite groundwater contamination attributed to past operations at the CCI facility.

In March 2011, EPA approved the Remedial Action Work Plan. The Plan provided a process to implement the final Remedial Design, including the site-specific plans for soil excavation and disposal, install a soil cover, apply chemical oxidants to destroy the contamination, and monitor the chemical oxidation performance.


PUBLIC AVAILABILITY MEETING

EPA will host a public availability session to provide information and answer questions on the final cleanup and restoration of the CCI Site. The public availability session will be held:

On September 22, 2011, EPA approved the Pre-Final Inspection, indicating that all construction activities described in the Remedial Design/Remedial Action Plans had been completed.
