BACKGROUND

Smelting operations began in Pittsburg in the late 1870's and continued on and off through World War I. The Pittsburg Zinc Site consists of areas of high concentrations of lead contamination from zinc smelting operations, and had previously been the target of numerous KDHE assessment efforts beginning in 1987, and continuing through 2008. In March 2009, at the request of the Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE), EPA began a removal assessment at the site. The removal action consisted of three phases.

THE CONTAMINATION

The primary contaminant of concern at this site is lead and lead compounds. Lead and lead compounds are hazardous and have been detected in the ground water, soils, and smelter wastes at the site.
