Fact Sheet

March 2013

Ongoing Sampling Activities, Chicago Heights Boulevard Site, St. Louis County, Missouri

UPCOMING SAMPLING

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 will oversee additional in-home sampling in the Elmwood Park community in St. Louis County, Missouri. This sampling is being conducted by PerkinElmer, Inc. (PerkinElmer), pursuant to an Administrative Settlement Agreement and Order on Consent (Order) entered into between EPA and PerkinElmer on November 26, 2012. The purpose of this sampling is to further define the extent of contamination in the community.

Additional homes are scheduled to be sampled during the first part of April 2013. Residents at homes scheduled to be sampled should have already been contacted to obtain access. The sampling is expected to take two to three weeks.

In November 2012, soil gas samples were collected in and around homes to determine if those homes were impacted by vapor intrusion in the neighborhood. Additional groundwater monitoring wells were also installed. Data from this most recent soil gas and groundwater sampling was analyzed, and used to help EPA determine what additional investigation and actions were necessary at the site.

EPA held a public meeting on March 7, 2013, with the Elmwood Park community to provide an update on results from soil gas sampling conducted at certain properties in the community. During this meeting, the upcoming sampling was also discussed.

The Order generally describes the work that is being performed by PerkinElmer to investigate and address this contamination.
