Environmental Follow Up, North 1st Street and Franklin Avenue Site, Kansas City, Wyandotte County, Kansas

INTRODUCTION

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 is working with the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kan., to ensure the removal of remaining hazardous materials at the North 1st Street and Franklin Avenue Site in Kansas City, Kansas. EPA and the Unified Government reached a legal agreement to ensure that all remaining contaminants be removed from the site.

JUNE 23 PUBLIC AVAILABILITY MEETING

EPA hosted a Public Availability Meeting on Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at the Juniper Gardens Community Center regarding the North 1st and Franklin Avenue investigation. The availability session was a follow up to the previous public meeting held in April 2009. The community requested that EPA conduct a follow-up meeting and notify the public about next steps in the investigation. Representatives from EPA, Housing Authority, Unified Government (UG), and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) were present to respond to questions and concerns. Other attendees included representatives from Senator Pat Roberts' and Congressman Dennis Moore's offices, and two community leaders.

COMMUNITY GARDEN SAMPLING RESULTS

EPA sampled soils from a community garden near North 1st Street and Franklin Avenue in response to community concern about the possibility of soil contamination in the vegetable garden. Analysis of the samples showed very low levels of metals and pesticides in the soil. These levels are below concentrations that are considered harmful to health. Therefore, people who garden or eat vegetables grown in the garden should not have any adverse health effects from eating the vegetables. Community members were advised to always wash vegetables thoroughly to ensure that they are clean, as with vegetables grown in any garden.

NEXT STEPS

The UG advised the community that they will be working with EPA to remove the remaining hazardous materials secured onsite.
