The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7, in consultation with the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality (NDEQ), has determined that no further action is needed at the former TRICO underground storage tank site.

BACKGROUND

The subject site is located on the southwest corner of Veteran’s Street (aka Highway 54) and Park Drive in Santee, Nebraska. EPA received reports from the Santee Sioux Tribe of the presence of an abandoned petroleum filling station at the subject site. The removal of the tanks from the site, along with the potential presence of some soil contamination, was documented in 1994 in reports filed by the State of Nebraska Fire Marshal. However, little characterization sampling and analyses were performed to evaluate the degree and extent of contamination. The subject site was now a residential property.

In September 2011, EPA Region 7 deployed to assess the situation. A Nebraska Risk-Based Corrective Action (RBCA) Tier 1 Assessment was performed. The assessment included the performance of a survey of the property, five soil borings, soil sampling, soil analysis, and documentation of processes and findings.

No groundwater was encountered in the length of the borings, so planned monitoring wells and groundwater sampling and analyses were cancelled. The assessment indicated that no actionable levels of contamination were present at the subject site. Based on these findings, EPA and NDEQ believe that no further action is warranted at the subject site.
