EPA Removal Action to Begin/Administrative Record Available, Former Air Capitol Dial, Inc., Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas
INTRODUCTION
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 7 will conduct a Removal Action (RA) at the former Air Capitol Dial, Inc. site, 1115 W. 2nd Street North, Wichita, Kansas.
The RA is to be completed in early March 2012. Post removal sampling will be conducted on soil at the site to ensure that no contamination is left behind to pose a threat to human health and the environment.
EPA also announces the availability of the Administrative Record (AR) for this action. The AR is now available at the following locations:

BACKGROUND
Air Capitol used the site as an aircraft dial repair shop where they stripped radioluminescent paint containing radium-226 from aircraft instruments and refurbished them from 1965 - 1973. This type of paint was used extensively on watch and clock faces from the early 1900s through World War II. The glow of radium-produced luminescence made aircraft dials, gauges, and other instruments visible to operators at night.
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment conducted a Site Reconnaissance and Evaluation and a Removal Site Evaluation in 2006. At the request of KDHE, EPA conducted a Removal Assessment in 2010, and a partial Multi-Agency Radiation Survey and Site Investigation on the interior of the structure in the fall of 2011.
