EPA Postpones June 2012 Public Meeting, Carter Carburetor Superfund Site, St. Louis, Missouri

INTRODUCTION

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Region 7 will postpone the June 2012 Carter Carburetor session until further notice. The meeting was to be held at the Herbert Hoover Boys and Girls Club.

Several active members of the Roundtable were contacted regarding the next meeting and all expressed the desire to postpone the meeting so that EPA can provide an update on cleanup plans for the site at a later date. Members of the community also expressed a desire for EPA to host a public meeting. EPA plans to continue discussions with the community and will host a public meeting in the near future.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

EPA has been meeting with nearby residents and interested stakeholders on a regular basis in roundtable discussions about EPA cleanup plans and community concerns related to the Carter Carburetor site. EPA meets with communities in various forums such as public meetings, public hearings, roundtables, and other formats to allow community members to actively participate in discussions related to cleanup options associated with any given Superfund site. EPA explained to the roundtable participants the type of information that drives the format for community input, and that the method to conduct outreach to the community is dynamic and can change forms, according to community need.

OFF-SITE SAMPLING RESULTS

EPA conducted off-site sampling within a one-block radius from the site. The sampling was done to determine if nearby residents or the environment were being impacted by hazardous waste moving from the site into the neighborhood.

Sampling was conducted May 2011, September 2011, and February 2012. Results from each sampling revealed no contaminants detected or found in sub-slab soil gas or indoor air above a level of health concern.

APRIL ROUNDTABLE

EPA met with the Carter community in April as a follow-up to the February 2012 roundtable. EPA explained to roundtable participants that even though the process appears lengthy, good conversation and dialogue is always important to gain a better understanding of the cleanup process.
