EPA Announces Fourth Roundtable Discussion, Carter Carburetor Superfund Site, St. Louis, Missouri

INTRODUCTION

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 invites members of the Carter Carburetor neighborhood, area stakeholders and other interested parties to the fourth roundtable discussion on Tuesday, April 24, 2012, 7:00 - 9:00 p.m., at the Herbert Hoover Boys and Girls Club, second floor conference room, 2901 North Grand Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri.

THE ROUNDTABLE

EPA held the third roundtable discussion on February 21, 2012, to continue the process of providing a place for community members to ask questions and express concerns about ongoing cleanup plans for the Carter Carburetor Site.

EPA gave an update on the status of the Carter Carburetor Site which included notification that the fence had been breached. EPA discussed the measures taken to secure the fence and worked with the building owner to ensure that there were no openings in the Carter building. EPA also provided general information on the legal process and the various steps involved with the negotiation process at any Superfund site.

A representative from the EPA Technical Assistance Program gave a presentation on “how contaminants move through the environment.”


FOURTH ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION

Topics for the April Roundtable will include: Address remaining questions on how contaminants move through the environment; other processes used to address contamination; and respond to questions from roundtable participants. The Roundtable discussion will be held:

SUCCESSFUL ROUNDTABLE INGREDIENTS

All participants were informed that in order to have a successful roundtable discussion, certain ingredients are needed. These ingredients include a need for participants to feel comfortable, a process that is informal, everyone should focus on the Carter Carburetor Site, everyone should be courteous of one another, and have thoughtful discussion and thoughtful listening.

MISSION OF THE ROUNDTABLE

The Carter Carburetor Roundtable is focused on the cleanup of the Carter Carburetor Site. It is an open and inclusive forum, held in the site neighborhood on a regular basis. It is a body that will focus on teamwork, better interaction, building trust, and ensuring that the community stakeholders, interested parties, and EPA staff are mutually informed and educated on site cleanup and its impacts on the neighborhood and larger community.

Each stakeholder represented at the roundtable will be responsible for communicating with their network of contacts about discussions held at the roundtable. EPA expects roundtable participants to come to the roundtable with concerns provided to them from their network of contacts.

New information added to the Carter website is a report on EPA off-site sampling conducted in May 2011. Due to its size, the report may take a few minutes to download. The report will be available online until May 1, 2012.

The report will be available electronically at all three information repositories listed above.
