EPA Announces Third Roundtable Discussion, Carter Carburetor Superfund Site, St. Louis, Missouri

INTRODUCTION

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 invites members of the Carter Carburetor neighborhood, area stakeholders and other interested parties to the third roundtable discussion on Tuesday, February 21, 2012, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m., at the Herbert Hoover Boys and Girls Club, 1st Floor Meeting Room, 2901 North Grand Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri.

THE ROUNDTABLE

EPA held the second roundtable discussion on January 10, 2012 to continue the process of providing a place for community members to ask questions and express concerns about cleanup activities at the Carter Carburetor Site. Several community groups and other interested stakeholders and citizens participated in another very lively discussion where many concerns were expressed and addressed. Some concerns expressed were:

EPA provided a brief site update which included EPA past activities and the current status of the site. EPA also provided a brief overview of the Superfund process under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) of 1980.


THIRD ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION

Topics for the February Roundtable will include:
How contaminants move through the environment, a Carter Carburetor Site update, and the EPA legal process.

SUCCESSFUL ROUNDTABLE INGREDIENTS

All participants were informed that in order to have a successful roundtable discussion, certain ingredients are needed. These ingredients include a need for participants to feel comfortable, a process that is informal, everyone should focus on the Carter Carburetor Site, everyone should be courteous of one another,  and have thoughtful discussion and thoughtful listening.

EPA provided locations to obtain information about ongoing activities at the Carter Carburetor Site, including the EPA Region 7 website.

MISSION OF THE ROUNDTABLE

The Carter Carburetor Roundtable is focused on the cleanup of the Carter Carburetor Site. It is an open and inclusive forum, held in the site neighborhood on a regular basis. It is a body that will focus on teamwork, better interaction, building trust, and ensuring that the community stakeholders, interested parties, and EPA staff are mutually informed and educated on site cleanup and its impacts on the neighborhood and larger community.

Each stakeholder represented at the roundtable will be responsible for communicating with their network of contacts about discussions held at the roundtable. EPA expects roundtable participants to come to the roundtable with concerns provided to them from their network of contacts.
