EPA Announces Extension of the Public Comment Period for the Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis Report, Carter Carburetor Superfund Site, St. Louis, Missouri

INTRODUCTION

Based upon a community request, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 is extending the public comment period for the Engineering Evaluation/Cost Analysis (EE/CA) Report findings for the Carter Carburetor Superfund Site. The comment period has been extended for 60 days. EPA will take comments by mail, e-mail, and telephone. The comment period will close on January 31, 2011.

The Carter Carburetor Superfund Site is located at 2800 to 2840 North Spring Street. The EE/CA Report was prepared by ACF Industries, Inc., a former owner of the Carter Carburetor Plant and a potentially-responsible party (PRP). EPA has reviewed and approved this EE/CA Report.

REQUEST FOR THE EXTENSION

EPA was contacted by Mr. Robert Kuehn, Co-Director, Interdisciplinary Environmental Clinic, Washington University School of Law. Mr. Kuehn contacted EPA on behalf of the Lindell Park Neighborhood Development Association requesting a 90-day extension to provide the community sufficient time to submit comments that will assist in deciding on the most appropriate long-term remedy for the site.

EPA will take comments by mail, e-mail, and telephone.

REASONS FOR THE EXTENSION

EPA's policies state that every reasonable effort should be taken to ensure that the affected community has every opportunity to become active participants in the Superfund process.
