SITE UPDATE

EPA has approved the Asbestos Abatement Work Plan Addendum with conditions for the Carter Carburetor site. Barring any unforeseen delays, ACF Industries LLC, the potentially responsible party, will begin the asbestos abatement phase of the removal action at the site on or about April 21, 2014. It is expected this phase of the work should be completed within six months of the start date. Asbestos abatement is the first phase of the CBI building demolition. EPA will oversee the abatement work in cooperation with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources Asbestos Program, to ensure that proper procedures are being followed.

ACF workers are mobilizing; placing office trailers on site; putting in power poles for electricity; and going through the building removing electrical parts containing PCBs from fluorescent lighting, and fluorescent bulbs. Workers are also removing mercury thermostat switches from the building. The ACF project coordinator is overseeing the mobilization and staging process.

PUBLIC AVAILABILITY MEETING

The public availability meeting will provide a forum for participants to find out about next steps in the removal and cleanup of hazardous substances at the Carter Carburetor site. The meeting will include an EPA update on the current process, and ACF Industries will provide a detailed explanation of work involved in the asbestos cleanup.
