Union Carbide proposes approximately six projects to demonstrate performance-based alternatives for compliance with various regulatory requirements at their Taft, Louisiana facility. The demonstration projects were developed as part of the Best Management Practices (BMP) pilot of the EPA's Sustainable Industries Project to test cleaner and cheaper environmental management. To help achieve the goals of these projects, Union Carbide will use its Environmental Management Systems (EMS) which establishes requirements for achievement of continuous improvement in Health, Safety and Environmental performance. These six demonstration projects affect air and water emissions, and hazardous waste. One or all of these proposed projects would affect RCRA regulations such as the permitted/interim status of Treatment, Storage, Disposal, or Recycling facility standards, wastewater land disposal regulations (Phase III and Phase IV LDR), and state and federal air quality regulations such as the HON and the State air toxics program, and Department of Transportation regulations.
