NOTES ON COMPILATION OF SCIENCE GUIDANCE DOCUMENTS

EPA is providing this compilation of science guidance documents in conjunction with the staff paper, Framework for Refining Science Policies (Staff Paper 20). That paper refers to various guidance documents that are being used by the Office of Pesticide Programs in the process of reviewing data and conducting risk assessments. These documents are not being presented for review and comment at this time, but are provided for information only.

These science guidance documents have been developed at various times in the past few years. While we believe they have served a useful purpose within the program, some are outdated and will be revised or replaced before the notice and comment process outlined in the science policy framework paper. Some of the documents were prepared as internal guidance or aids for staff in conducting their reviews of studies or completing other aspects of the risk assessment process and have not been generally available outside OPP. Others have been more thoroughly reviewed and presented to outside groups such as the FIFRA Scientific Advisory Panel. Many of them were written for EPA staff who conduct risk assessments and might not be easily read by outside audiences.

Where possible, we have noted in the Table of Contents where the existing guidance will be updated or replaced. All of these issues and approaches will, of course, be affected by the public review process.
