Mission Statement
The public health workgroup will focus on issues specific to pesticides that control pests that vector disease (e.g., public health pesticides). These issues may affect regulatory, policy, programmatic, environmental, technical, economic, or science policy decisions. Like other PPDC workgroups, the public health workgroup will report its recommendations and advice to the PPDC for full deliberation and discussion. It will be an ongoing workgroup that will be called upon intermittently to address issues involving pesticides with public health uses as they arise.
Creating a special workgroup to address public health pesticides would be more efficient and would increase the quality of PPDC’s input, by obtaining advice from a broader group of public health stakeholders. Increased representation of public health departments, community and environmental justice organizations, and proponents of children’s health would allow broader stakeholder engagement and thus more effective recommendations through the PPDC.
Current issues that this workgroup could address include: follow-up to the Bed Bug Summit; label improvements specific to public health uses, such as proposed repellent label changes; efficacy issues; international work/data sharing initiative to encourage the development of new pesticides or new uses of existing pesticides to control pests of public health significance and any other activities with a public health slant.
