Diagnostic Biomarkers of Effect and Exposure (45 minutes)
Background: In the 2007 NAS report on Toxicity Testing in the 21st Century: A Vision and Strategy, a progression science and technology activities was envisioned starting with a focused research effort first to understand the toxicity pathways for a select group of health effects or molecular mechanisms, which would guide research to identify biomarkers associated with the toxicity-pathway perturbations that could be used for human surveillance. NAS envisioned that studies conducted in human cells would indicate how environmental agents could affect human biologic responses and that these studies would lead to the identification of useful biomarkers (e.g., indicators of human exposure, effect, or susceptibility) that could be used in population health surveillance and biomonitoring.
Our work group is focused on successful communication and transition of new predictive and testing methods over the next three to five years. As part of our workgroup objective a key transition activity includes identifying applications of this ‘new’ science in “developing new diagnostic tools and biomarkers” and providing process recommendations to transition to the new testing paradigm.

We would like to discuss this particular aspect of our workgroup objective:

How can EPA communicate the evolving science on diagnostic and bio-markers?
How can EPA take steps to facilitate the transition to using new tools for diagnosis and biomarkers of exposure?
