Pesticide News Story:New EPA Total Release Fogger Videos Encourage Safe Use Practices

The EPA has created a series of new videos to educate the public about the potential hazards associated with the incorrect use of total release foggers in the home and to encourage users to read label directions and take safety precautions when using foggers. Total release foggers, also known as "bug bombs," are pesticide products containing aerosol propellants that release their contents at once to fumigate an area. These products are often used in the home to kill cockroaches, fleas, and other pests. The new videos were created in both English and Spanish and emphasize three main safety topics:
- Keep foggers away from ignition sources
- Do not use more foggers than necessary
- Vacate and ventilate the treated residence after fogger application
EPA encourages safe use practices for foggers. The most effective way to reduce or eliminate pest problems and risks posed by pesticides is to first prevent pests from entering the home by removing sources of food and water, and destroying pest shelters and breeding sites. However, if a total release fogger is used to control pests, it is important to always read and follow the safety precautions on the label. Using “bug bombs” or Total Release Foggers without following label precautions could cause injury or explosions.
