              NONROAD Emissions Inventory Model

NR-NOTE4.TXT April 1, 1999

This is one item in a series of notes being issued concerning the
DRAFT EPA NONROAD model, which was released on June 18, 1998, and
distributed at the workshop in Chicago on June 25. There were
updated/corrected versions of some of the model files in July and
October of 1998, which were posted on the Nonroad web site.
Various technical reports documenting the model inputs were also
distributed via the web site at various times since June 1998.

This release updates all the files needed to run the NONROAD
model, including the core model (nonroad.exe), the input data
files, the graphic user interface (nr-gui.exe), and the reporting
utility. This version of the model supports the emission
inventory estimates for the Tier 2 Proposed Rule.

The full description of changes made to the model and associated
addenda to the technical reports are contained in two new
technical reports:

"Technical Report Addenda" (techadd1.wpd or techadd1.pdf)

"Exhaust Emission Factors for Nonroad Engine Modeling
--Spark Ignition, Report No. NR-010b, revised March 23, 1999.
   (nr-010b.wpd or nr-010b.pdf)

INSTALLATION OF NEW FILES

CAUTION: Outputs from the new version of the core model
(nonroad.exe) are not compatible with the old Reporting Utility,
since the new outputs provide separate refueling displacement and
spillage estimates. If you have any OUTput files from which you
want to be able to generate reports, or any modeling runs stored
in the old Reporting Utility, you WILL LOSE THEM (or at least the
ability to generate reports from them) unless you move them to
some other directory before installing the new versions. OUTput
files are found in the nonroad\outputs\ directory, and the
Reporting Utility files that you may want to save are
reports.mdb, nrdata.mdb, and compact.mdb, all of which are in the
nonroad\reports\ directory.

Also note that if you try using any old versions of OPTion files,
you may get warnings or possible errors when attempting to use
them with the new version of the model. If the Warnings only
refer to certain unused files such as DISPLACE.EMF, then there is
no problem. But if an actual Error occurs you will need to
create a new version of the OPT file starting with the new
TEMPLATE.OPT file.

I. Installation from ZIP'd (compressed) Files From Web

If you have a prior installation of NONROAD on your computer, be
sure to read the warnings above about saving any desired files
from previous modeling runs.

All the new model files are contained in three ZIP'd (compressed)
files:

nr99a1.zip (core model, graphic user interface, data files)
 nr99a2.zip (reporting utility)
nr99a3.zip (graphic interface DLL files, unchanged from earlier)

The first two of these files should be placed in your main
NONROAD model folder, such as c:\nonroad\. You can then
uncompress and install these new files using an unZIP utility of
your choice, such as PKUNZIP or WINZIP. If you already have a
functioning older version of the Graphic User Interface (GUI) on
your computer, then you should not need to do anything with the
nr99a3.zip file. Be sure to set the unZIP options to include the
folder names when extracting the files. If using PKUNZIP from the
DOS prompt, the options you should specify are:

-d (restore directory structure stored in ZIP file), and
 -o (overwrite previously existing files)

So the DOS command to unZIP the first file above would be:
 pkunzip -do nr99a1.zip

When done extracting all the files, check that all the \data\
subdirectories exist and have files in them. E.g.,
nonroad\data\allocate\ should have lots of files ending in .ALO.
When done with both nr99a1.zip and nr99a2.zip, you can delete
both of them.

If you do not already have a prior version of the GUI on your
computer, then you will need to place the nr99a3.zip file into a
temporary directory, such as c:\windows\temp\, unZIP it, and then
run the setup.exe file from there to complete the installation of
the graphic user interface. After running setup.exe, you can
delete the files from the temporary directory.

II. Installation from CD or Zip Disk (no .zip compressed files)

 A. Users With a Prior Installation of NONROAD on Computer

After saving any desired files as described above, you can just
copy the new files from the CD or Zip disk into the corresponding
directories of your computer's hard drive. You can ignore the
nonroad\gui-inst\ directory. Then see step B (3) below.

 B. Users With No Prior Installation of NONROAD

 (1) Copy the entire \nonroad\ directory with all its
subdirectories onto the root directory of your c: drive,
resulting in c:\nonroad\ and all its subdirectories, such as
c:\nonroad\data\activity\, c:\nonroad\reports\, etc.

 (2) Go into the \gui-inst\ directory and run SETUP.EXE. This
will install the necessary Visual Basic system files into your
windows directory to allow the Graphic User Interface (GUI) to
run properly.

 (3) If copied from a CD, you will need to remove the "Read-Only"
attribute from all the files. The easiest way to do this is to
go to the DOS Prompt, go to the c:\nonroad\ directory, and enter
the command:

 attrib /s *.* -r

This sets the file attributes for all files in c:\nonroad\ and
all its subdirectories. The more tedious method involves using
Windows Explorer or File Manager, selecting all the files within
each subdirectory, and using the menu command - File:
Properties... and de-selecting the "Read-only" checkbox. This is
tedious because it must be done separately for each subdirectory.

III. Finishing Touches

 A. All Users: The first time you run the new Reporting Utility,
you will need to Re-Attach Tables (see the Data menu).

 B. Users Who Did Not Have a Prior Installation of NONROAD on
Computer:

(1) You will need to create a new directory: c:\nonroad\outputs\.
This is where the core model places its output files, and where
the Reporting Utility expects to import them from.

(2) You will want to create a New Shortcuts (desktop icons). The
first one of these should point to the "target" command line
c:\nonroad\nr-gui.exe to be able to run the model easily.

The second shortcut you need to create is for the Reporting
Utility. The command line target you need to use in the shortcut
is: (all on one line)

C:\NONROAD\REPORTS\MSARN200.EXE c:\nonroad\reports\reports.mdb
 /ini c:\nonroad\reports\nonroad.ini

The third shortcut you need to create is for the Compact Utility
for the Reports. The command line target you need to use in the
shortcut is: (all on one line)

C:\NONROAD\REPORTS\MSARN200.EXE c:\nonroad\reports\compact.mdb
 /ini c:\nonroad\reports\nonroad.ini

You can also get the proper icon to display with each of these
reporting utility shortcuts. In the Properties for the shortcut,
click on the Change Icon... button and in the Nonroad\Reports\
folder find the "reports.ico" file for the Reporting Utility, and
for the Compact Utility choose "squash.ico."

After creating these shortcuts, you can also get them to show up
in the Startup menu by copying or moving the the shortcut files
from C:\Windows\Desktop\ into C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\.
