US Environmental Protection Agency Office of Transportation and Air Quality (formerly Office of Mobile Sources) NONROAD Emissions Inventory Model NR-NOTE8.TXT June 8, 2000 Web Release of Updated Draft NONROAD Model in Support of 2007 HD Vehicle Rule I. Overview This note contains this overview section, a section for users installing model files from the web, a section for users installing model files from a CD, and a section on finishing touches for all users. This replaces Note 7, which only covered installation from CD. This is one item in a series of notes being issued concerning the DRAFT EPA NONROAD model, which was released in June 1998. There were updated/corrected versions of some of the model files in July and October of 1998 and in April 1999, which were posted on the Nonroad web site. Various technical reports documenting the model inputs have also been distributed via the web site at various times since June 1998. This release updates the input data files to match what is being used in the air quality modeling for the 2007 Heavy Duty Highway Vehicle rulemaking. Documentation of these changes can be found in the May 31, 2000, EPA memo titled "Changes to the NONROAD Model for the April 2000 Version Used in Support of the 2007 Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine Rule," which was submitted to the EPA Air Docket Docket A-99-06. The model and data files are being made available as part of EPA's effort to allow public review of the methods and data involved in this rulemaking. Users should refer to the file POSTLI12.TXT for guidance on SIP and other uses of NONROAD. This release also includes minor updates to the Reporting Utility as described below. The core model executable (nonroad.exe) has not changed since Feb 23, 1999, and the Graphic User Interface (GUI) has not changed since the last release dated January 3, 2000. The CD includes all the files needed to run the NONROAD model, including the core model, the input data files, the graphic user interface (nr-gui.exe), and the reporting utility. The minor changes to the Reporting Utility since the April 1999 release are: a) corrections to a few FIPS and county name spellings in the Counties table. b) Specialty Vehicle Carts have been changed to "lumped" in the Equipment Types table, meaning that 2- and 4-stroke equipment populations under 25 hp have been combined, in recognition that most of these vehicles are covered by EPA emission standards for small spark-ignition engines, which is expected to result in a shift from 2-stroke to 4-stroke engines. c) New airport ground support equipment SCC codes have been added in the Equipment Types table. These are not currently used, but were added in anticipation of a more detailed future method of accounting for these equipment types, rather than counting them all as a single equipment type. II. Installation from ZIP'd (compressed) Files From Web CAUTION: If wish to retain any model outputs that you already have imported into your Reporting Utility (these are contained in the nrdata.mdb file), you should just install the updated main reporting utility file, REPORTS.MDB, which is contained in REPT-MDB.ZIP. If you install the full set of reporting utility files (NR00A2.ZIP), you risk overwriting your old nrdata.mdb file. Alternatively, you could save your current nrdata.mdb file to a different directory temporarily and then move it back into c:\nonroad\reports\ after installing the full set of reporting utility files. UnZIPing files: All the model files are contained in ZIP'd (compressed) files. You can uncompress and install these new files using an unZIP utility of your choice, such as PKUNZIP or WINZIP. Be sure to set the unZIP options to include the folder names when extracting the files. If using PKUNZIP from the DOS prompt, the options you should specify are: -d (restore directory structure stored in ZIP file), and -o (overwrite previously existing files) For example, the DOS command to unZIP the new NONROAD data file would be: pkunzip -do nr00a1.zip A. Users With a Prior Installation of NONROAD If you have a prior installation of NONROAD on your computer, be sure to read the warnings above about saving any desired files from previous modeling runs. You will need two or three of the following files: NR00A1.ZIP (core model, new data files, and instuctions) The core model, NONROAD.EXE, is still the version dated 2/23/99, but most of the data files are new. Place this ZIP file into your c:\nonroad directory and unZIP it, allowing it to overwrite any existing versions of the files, including the entire nonroad\data\ subdirectory. REPT-MDB.ZIP (updated main reporting utility file only, for existing users) Place this ZIP file into your c:\nonroad\reports\ subdirectory and unZIP it, allowing it to overwrite the existing version of reports.mdb. NR-GUI.ZIP (January 2000 version of Graphic User Interface) This is needed only if you do not already have the January 2000 update of NR-GUI.EXE. Place this ZIP file into your c:\nonroad directory and unZIP it, allowing it to overwrite the existing version of nr-gui.exe. B. Users With No Prior Installation of NONROAD All the model files are contained in ZIP'd (compressed) files: NR00A1.ZIP (core model, new data files, and instuctions) NR00A2.ZIP (reporting utility, all files, for new installations) NR-GUI.ZIP (graphic user interface EXE file, January 2000 update) NR99A3.ZIP (graphic interface DLL files, unchanged from earlier) The first three of these files should be placed in your main NONROAD model folder, such as c:\nonroad\. You can then uncompress and install these new files using an unZIP utility of your choice, as described above. When done extracting all the files, check that all the \data\ subdirectories exist and have files in them. E.g., nonroad\data\allocate\ should have lots of files ending in .ALO. When done with NR00A1.ZIP and NR00A2.ZIP, you can delete both of them. You will want to place the NR99A3.ZIP file into a temporary directory, such as c:\windows\temp\, unZIP it, and then run the SETUP.EXE file from there to complete the installation of the graphic user interface. After running SETUP.EXE, you can delete the files from the temporary directory. Finally, please follow the instructions below in Section IV, Finishing Touches. III. INSTALLATION OF NEW FILES FROM CD CAUTION: If wish to retain any model outputs that you already have imported into your Reporting Utility (these are contained in the nrdata.mdb file), you should NOT copy the new nrdata.mdb file from the CD, since doing so would overwrite your existing nrdata.mdb file. Alternatively, you could save your current nrdata.mdb file to a different directory temporarily and then move it back into c:\nonroad\reports\ after copying files from the CD. A. Users With a Prior Installation of NONROAD on Computer After saving any desired files as described above, you can just copy the new files from the CD into the corresponding directories of your computer's hard drive. You can ignore the nonroad\gui-inst\ directory. Then see step B (3) below. B. Users With No Prior Installation of NONROAD (1) Copy the entire \nonroad\ directory with all its subdirectories onto the root directory of your c: drive, resulting in c:\nonroad\ and all its subdirectories, such as c:\nonroad\data\activity\, c:\nonroad\reports\, etc. (2) Go into the \gui-inst\ directory and run SETUP.EXE. This will install the necessary Visual Basic system files into your windows directory to allow the Graphic User Interface (GUI) to run properly. (3) If copied from a CD, you will need to remove the "Read-Only" attribute from most of the files. You can do this by running the ATTRIB.BAT file from the Nonroad directory, or you can manually go to the DOS Prompt, change to the c:\nonroad\ directory, and enter the command: attrib /s *.* -r This sets the file attributes for all files in c:\nonroad\ and all its subdirectories. A more tedious method of doing this involves using Windows Explorer or File Manager, selecting all the files within each subdirectory, and using the menu command - File: Properties... and de-selecting the "Read-only" checkbox. This is tedious because it must be done separately for each subdirectory. (4) Please go to Section IV, Finishing Touches. IV. Finishing Touches A. All Users: The first time you run the new Reporting Utility, you will need to Re-Attach Tables (see the Data menu). B. Users Who Did Not Have a Prior Installation of NONROAD on Computer: (1) You will need to create a new directory: c:\nonroad\outputs\. This is where the core model places its output files, and where the Reporting Utility expects to import them from. (2) You will want to create New Shortcuts (desktop icons). The first one of these should point to the "target" command line c:\nonroad\nr-gui.exe to be able to run the model easily. The second shortcut you need to create is for the Reporting Utility. The command line target you need to use in the shortcut is: (all on one line) C:\NONROAD\REPORTS\MSARN200.EXE c:\nonroad\reports\reports.mdb /ini c:\nonroad\reports\nonroad.ini The third shortcut you need to create is for the Compact Utility for the Reports. The command line target you need to use in the shortcut is: (all on one line) C:\NONROAD\REPORTS\MSARN200.EXE c:\nonroad\reports\compact.mdb /ini c:\nonroad\reports\nonroad.ini You can also get the proper icon to display with each of these reporting utility shortcuts. In the Properties for the shortcut, click on the Change Icon... button and in the Nonroad\Reports\ folder find the "reports.ico" file for the Reporting Utility, and for the Compact Utility choose "squash.ico." After creating these shortcuts, you can also get them to show up in the Startup menu by copying or moving the the shortcut files from C:\Windows\Desktop\ into C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\.
