US Environmental Protection Agency Office of Mobile Sources NONROAD Emissions Inventory Model July 17, 1998 This is one item in a series of notes being issued concerning the draft EPA NONROAD model, which was released on June 18, 1998, and distributed at the workshop in Chicago on June 25. Issues that were known at the time of release are covered in a separate Release Notes document, which was included on the distribution CD. The updated files listed below are ZIP'd to simplify some of the downloads and so that the date stamps on the data files will be the same on your computer after you download and unZIP them as they are on the EPA systems. This will help you keep track of the versions in use and will help us provide support as needed. If you are unfamiliar with unZIPing files, please see the information provided on the EPA NONROAD web site. 1) NONROAD release and review dates - The draft EPA NONROAD model was released on June 18, 1998. Comments on the model are due by August 18, 1998. 2) Long county names, Correction to GUI - Problem: When choosing to do a county level model run, the Graphical User Interface (GUI) on the release CD did not properly handle county names longer than about 10 characters. When writing the comment field in the Region packet in the OPTion file it would write the county name followed by "County " and then the state abbreviation. When choosing a county with a name longer than 10 characters, the entire string, e.g., "Los Angeles County CA" would spill over into the actual data field where the model expects to find the FIPS code. This would seriously corrupt the OPT file, sometimes removing lines below that record including the /END/ packet terminator. Solution: Either download the newer version of the GUI that has this fixed (it truncates the county name at 10 characters), or use a text editor to enter the desired county FIPS codes into the /REGION/ packet of the OPT file. Note that whatever is in the comment area (first 20 characters) of the record is totally ignored by the model -- it's only there for your reference when viewing the OPT file in a text editor. The new version of nr- gui.exe should be placed in your main \nonroad\ directory where the core model (nonroad.exe) is located. 3) Growth Data File Corrected - The nation.grw file distributed with the model was one based on BEA indicators, whereas the intention as described in technical report NR-008 and the 6/25/98 workshop was for the model to use growth projections based on PSR data. The correct PSR-based growth file is now available. This new file should be placed in your \nonroad\data\growth\ subdirectory. 4) Equipment Population (.POP) Data Files Updated - At the 6/25/98 workshop it was noted that certain types of 4- stroke recreational equipment, such as off-road motorcycles, had been inadvertently left out of the .POP files. This has now been remedied. Also, some changes in the median life values for spark-ignition recreational marine engines have been made in the POP files. These new files should be placed in your \nonroad\data\pop\ subdirectory. 5) Emission Factor (.EMF) Files Updated - The emission factor data files were updated to remove any effects of emission regulations on underground mining equipment (SCC 2270009010), since such equipment is exempted from the regulations. Also, the Crankcase emission factors (file crank.emf) were updated to more accurately reflect small spark- ignition engine crankcase emission controls. These new files should be placed in your \nonroad\data\emsfac\ subdirectory. 6) Technology Phase-In File Updated - Technology fractions that did not add to 1.0 were corrected. The SCC's involved were: 2265006005, 2265006010, and 2282005010. The new file should be placed in your \nonroad\data\tech\ subdirectory. 7) Seasonal Allocation File Updated - This had two different entries for diesel recreational equipment, so the erroneous one was removed. The new file should be placed in your \nonroad\data\season\ subdirectory. 8) Reporting Utility Keyboard "Lockup" - On rare occasions certain users have experienced a keyboard lockup (inability to type anything) upon importing a new model simulation into the Reporting Utility when attempting to enter a table name into the dialog box. If you have experienced this problem more than once or if you are able to make it happen regularly, please contact us at the address below to try out a revised version of the reporting utility that may fix the problem. 9) Getting NONROAD Core Model to Run in Background - This is optional. It will allow you to use your computer to run other applications while performing long NONROAD model runs. In Windows 95 Explorer, right click on and go to properties of the files NONROAD.EXE and NONROAD (which is a shortcut to run the NONROAD.EXE program). Under Misc/Background uncheck "Always suspend." If desired, you can also uncheck the "Close on Exit" box in Properties: Program to keep the DOS window open after a model run completes. If using Windows 3.1 use the PIF Editor to edit NONROAD.PIF to make the corresponding changes to allow NONROAD.EXE to run in the background.
