EPA’s Hospital Disinfectant Post-Market Testing Results Now Online

As part of its Antimicrobials Testing Program, the Environmental Protection Agency has tested the effectiveness of hospital disinfectants and posted the results on the agency’s ATP web page. This efficacy information should be of particular interest to hospitals and others who buy antimicrobial products that make public health claims.
All antimicrobial pesticides making public health claims must provide efficacy data that the EPA reviews during the registration process. Following registration, the EPA collects and tests samples from a subset of public health products in the marketplace using efficacy test methods that provide a rigorous challenge to the product. Those that do not meet the high ATP standard are brought into compliance through regulatory or enforcement measures. The agency has completed testing the majority of registered hospital disinfectants and tuberculocide products and posted a list of the testing status of these products to assist users in making informed choices regarding infection control in their facilities. The list of products the EPA posted online today consists of three categories:
- Agency Confirmed Efficacy - Includes products that have passed ATP testing by the agency’s lab and are confirmed as efficacious hospital disinfectants.
- Agency Taking Action - Includes products under EPA deliberation, including actions such as undergoing testing, review or taking regulatory or enforcement action.
- No Post-Market Testing by EPA - Now Includes products labeled for use in dialysis facilities, newly registered products that have not yet undergone post-market testing and registered products that were not in production at time of collection.
