Pesticide News Story: Additional Guidance on Unapproved Inerts and Pesticide Registration Applications Submitted under PRIA 2
For Release: March 27, 2009
EPA’s Office of Pesticide Programs is providing additional guidance on what makes an application for pesticide registration complete. Under the Pesticide Registration Improvement Renewal Act (PRIA 2), the Agency has 21 days after it receives an application covered by PRIA to conduct an initial content screen to verify payment and that all of the required forms, labeling and data have been submitted. If contents are missing, the Agency will reject the application.
The new guidance clarifies that EPA will reject an application for registration of a pesticide product that contains an unapproved inert ingredient, unless an applicant requests an inert approval and provides the necessary data.
The Agency’s 21-day initial content screen review worksheet lists all the basic elements of an application and has been revised to include this additional guidance about unapproved inert ingredients for both applicants and Agency reviewers conducting the screen. Further information about the 21-Day Screen, and the Worksheet are available on the Web site.
